How do I make this sound less like an essay and more like a blogpost…
Education is really, really, really important. It’s such a great thing. And it keeps getting more and more important every day as more people start to appreciate (and reap) its benefits. Like now, I wouldn’t be at my internship not feeling useful and hating it if I had a degree. The sad part about how important education has become now is that, even my Bachelor’s degree, which I feel like a lot of sweat and blood and tears have gone into (ok, maybe not blood) might as well be a high school diploma. In 2011, it seems like you need a Masters because every Keisha, Monique and Shantae has a Bachelor’s just like you.
Education leads to awareness, better choices, worthwhile contributions to society, a self-sufficient lifestyle and general dependency avoidance and several more positive externalities :) Who would want to say no to this?
I’ll be the first to admit that education is not the only path to achieving these desirable things. We are all born with different strengths, and it’s up to us to hone these skills in order to create a fulfilling life for ourselves. Generally, I feel like people can make money off their beauty or looks, talent or their brains. The first two have an element of luck, (well, more so the first than the second), but most of us choose the third because it seems to be the most reliable. If our looks or talent aren’t what society sees as one-in a million, we use the option #3 formula :)
There are people who were never good at school, or chose not to go at all, dropped out, or didn’t even have the opportunity to because of personal or financial struggles, and today they are wealthy because of another strength that they possessed. As much as education can help, it is not the end all and be all; we are all capable of achieving some success without it, it is just the most secure and well-trodden path of several.
