30-Day Challenge: Day 6 - My Views on Mainstream Music

Things that annoy me about mainstream music:

  • It’s always the same five songs in constant heavy rotation on the radio- especially true in the US. (Deuces anyone?)
  • I may not like a song when I hear it but I can rest assured that the force will have me singing or at least appreciating it to some extent after I’ve been beaten over the head with it enough times (Case in point: Over - Drake sounded discord as hell to me when I heard it, then I loved it. What the hell?)
  • Lady Gaga
  • Crazy Justin Beiber and Jonas Brothers fans.
  • Ok.. I don’t actually dislike Gaga. I just think she’s overrated. What I like about her: her voice, her piano playing ability, her free-spiritedness. What I don’t: the songs she makes that sound like crap, and yet sell because she is Le Gaga. Like Judas. Most of her videos… I abhor. The dancing is usually okay, but I hate when people try to be super deep and create concepts within concepts for things that look and sound dumb. Judas is going to be played at a gay club for grinding, merry-making and making-out purposes. It does not need to have an Inceptionesque tertiary meaning. Stop it Gaga. Anyway, I’m sure Gaga pays for her sins by having to be uncomfortable every night she’s at an award show. Having clammy meat on your skin for hours? She can keep that.

Things I like about mainstream music:

  • Everybody usually knows the song when it comes on and you can bond in the club :-) Seriously, what sort of night would it be if the DJ decided to play his own favorite band that you’ve never heard of, with the argument that it’s good music and you should appreciate it just as much even though they’re not famous? How many of you would be so damn ‘open-minded’ then…? Hmm?
  • I love me some Kanye and some Beyoncé. I stan hard for them both. Other honorable mentions: Adele (who I guess wasn’t mainstream till recently), John Legend, Lil’ Wayne, Rihanna, Drake, Alicia Keys, Usher <3 and recently Chris Brown and Trey on a good day. All mainstream artists, all undisputedly talented.
  • Mainstream music also allows me to indulge in my guilty pleasures, whose names are Taylor Swift and Justin Beiber. Justin Beiber is so sexy. You can’t tell me nothin’.

Things that make me stand up for mainstream music even when it may be annoying me too:

  • Music snobs who believe that everything on the radio is crap, and that those who listen to mainstream music and enjoy it are conformists and spineless bores who don’t have the courage to explore all the other so much better stuff that’s out there. Have several seats. The anti-trend movement is the new trend. That means you (and all your ‘be cool’ efforts) ain’t shit.
