I can’t pick just one… should be it a classic, a life-changing biography or a book I loved to read growing up?
I chose The Girl Who Can and other stories by Ama Atta-Aidoo, a renowned Ghanaian author and playwright. I read this book alllll the time during my err.. ‘formative’ years. I loved it… took it everywhere with me. I think I need to read it again. I feel though, and a lot of people seem to have expressed a similar view, that the book should be called Choosing and other stories. Choosing is one of the best stories, and very relatable. The main character is deciding which career path to take. She really wants to be a writer but doesn’t think that will adequately sustain her financially. She tries teaching and trading and a few other ventures, but always returns to writing through some means. Lice is another good one, so is Nowhere Cool.

Books that came close: A book on gender the challenges of masculinity called A Little Book on Men by Rahul Roy, Metamorphosis by Franz Kakfa (complained because I was made to read it… but I enjoyed it), Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, Changes: A Love Story by Ama Atta Aidoo, and I’m nearly ashamed to add my guilty pleasure If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon, hehe. Also, a very creepy Anonymous book I read. It was really good, and well-written, but did it even have a title? Doubt it…
